Link Laundering – Link Building Like An Internet Mobster

How To Turn Low Quality and Questionable Links into High Quality One Way Links

Warning: The following method of link building (link laundering) is looked upon as either a Gray or Black Hat technique by many in the Internet World. I feel it’s my duty to educate my readers about these tactics so you’re aware of them if you ever see your competition using them against you.

link launderingHave you ever ran across sites that ranked higher than your site, but felt your site was much better, so you wondered how that could happen? Some of you may have actually used tools like SEO Quake or SEO for Firefox and found that those sites had more links to them than yours did.

“How could they be getting so many links when I’m busting my ass for a few links a month?” you might ask yourself

“My content is better, my on page SEO is better, site design is off the chart, I have more RSS subscribers, my domain is older plus I’m better looking than those guys” you may think to yourself

Come my friend, let me introduce you to the underworld of link laundering.

Let’s me start by saying that link laundering usually involves a network of sites or blogs that the Webmaster owns or has access to. It can be done without a network, but link laundering is easier in many regards if you own or control a network of blogs or websites.

Featured Freeware: Z-Cron

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets

You can rely on Z-Cron as a robust scheduler that can handle not only shutting down the computer, but also launching programs, leave reminder notes, and cleaning directories. Similar to the Unix Cron scheduler, and far more powerful than the native Windows task scheduler, Z-Cron is an aggressive sergeant at arms, able to tell your computer what to do and when to do it, leaving you to get on with your life when you’re away from your machine. Besides tasks, Z-Cron also has the capability to schedule tasks to run daily, weekly, monthly, once, and regularly at your system start-up.

The most useful tool that Z-Cron possesses, and what makes it such an excellent utility, is that it comes with a database of Embedded Tools. These tools are the basis for everything it can do, and they include a range of tasks such as an alarm clock, the capability to shut down a remote computer on your network, activate a USB peripheral, and connect or disconnect from the Internet.

Note that the installation is in German, although the program is in English. Still, that’s not a cause for concern: getting the program going is about as simple as can be. The value of being able to have the computer do necessary tasks while you sleep or while you’re away is a great weapon in any power users’ arsenal.

Featured Freeware: Kruptos 2

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets

This is easily one of the more useful freeware file encryption programs around. Kruptos 2’s file menu and icon interface are the picture of simplicity. Encryption is almost effortless. You can drag and drop files to the Kruptos 2 window, and the latest version adds support for dragging and dropping folders.

The encryption algorithm is Blowfish 128-bit or 256-bit, and fast. A key feature obfuscates file names but leaves folder names unaltered. The program offers a feature to see original file names with the proper password, but it is invoked one file at a time. However, Windows integration means you can perform all functions from your context menu.

Unlike many similar programs, files in nested folders are all quickly encrypted as individual files. With a single click you can decrypt a file and edit it, and the file re-encrypts on close. Self-extracting encrypted files are created with a minimum of fuss. The Shred function deletes original files to DOD standards. The program does offer a nag screen for donations, but only once. Kruptos2, with all its features, is what every user needing simple file encryption desires.

Featured Freeware: TrueCrypt

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets

The ultimate open-source encryption program, TrueCrypt is loaded with powerful features that those concerned with protecting their data from thievery should want–and have.

It offers 11 algorithms for encrypting your private files in a password-protected volume. You can store your encrypted data in files (containers) or partitions (devices). TrueCrypt works hard to offer powerful data protection, recommending complex passwords, explaining the benefits of hidden volumes, and erasing telltale signs of the encryption process, including mouse movements and keystrokes. Though the interface may not be immediately intuitive, its powerful, on-the-fly encryption for no cost still earns the freeware security tool a top rating.

The latest version gives users the ability to create a hidden operating system, encrypted away from nosy busybodies, but make no mistake–TrueCrypt is not for the casual encryption explorer. Online help is plentiful and detailed, but be sure to thoroughly understand what you’re doing with the program before you do something regrettable.

Featured Freeware: Jing Project

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets

The team behind the screen-recording utility Camtasia have released a simplified, experimental version of the technology, packaged into a nice downloadable application for Windows and Mac called the Jing Project.

Jing makes it very easy to grab screenshots and videos straight from your PC, and then save them or share them on the Web. The coolest part of this experiment–in theory–is Jing’s integration with Screencast.com, a hosting service for videos recorded off your computer. Once you’ve recorded a video, you can save it to your Screencast account, and from there you can get an embed code to put it in a blog or other page.

The experimental Jing is great, but oddly, the well-established Screencast.com site is the weak link in the chain. It’s unattractive, and the embed codes are nearly impossible to find. Plus, after 60 days, the free trial service expires–so don’t get hooked if you can’t stomach the .95 a month fee for screencast hosting. Jing really needs a quick and easy way to upload files to free vid-sharing sites.
FLV uploads are recommended to be in H.264, but other than that, for a clean, flexible, and almost fun way to grab pictures and onscreen videos, Jing really can’t be beat.

Featured Freeware: Growl

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets

When you’re working on your Mac, sometimes things happen in the background that you would like to keep track of while working in another application. Growl works with hundreds of popular Mac apps to notify you of specific tasks like when a download is complete or when your CD burning project is finished.

For example, it will tell you in Adium when a friend comes online while you’re working on something entirely different, and it can notify you when your EOD backup is done.

We like having control over what gets a Growl notification, and and the ability to choose from numerous skins to customize the look of each notification. Overall, if you’re looking for a way to always know what’s going on with your running applications, this free program is an excellent way to stay notified.

ShoZu shares iPhone photos in one swell swoop

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets
ShoZu on iPhone(Credit: CNET Networks)

There are several media-pushing services represented at the opening of the iTunes App Store, each with their own combination of supported sites. ShoZu (covered here) remains the whopper of them all with support for roughly 30 popular social sites and services. There are the major players, of course–Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, Photobucket, Blogger, Picasa, LiveJournal–but ShoZu isn’t too high and mighty to upload text and images to some of the more niche guys, like Box.Net qipit, Snapfish, and SmugMug.

With so many services ready to cram into an app interface, things could get tangled up fast. But they don’t, partly due to the iPhone’s nice big screen and partly due to a structure designed to keep order. Frequent uploaders can automate multiplatform-pushing by going online and adding up to ten child services to be copied each time media is posted to the parent service.

My biggest gripe? That while you can sign up for a ShoZu account from the iPhone itself, you have to visit the Web site to arrange for multi-pinging. It’s the glue that ties ShoZu together for many users, and is something they’ll need to add to truly be a stand-alone app on the iPhone.

Find a silver screen from your iPhone screen

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets
Movies.app

My favorite thing about open platforms that allow third-party developers to run wild is when those independent programmers actually do. Jeffrey Grossman wrote a free native application called Movies.app that revolves around movie listings and offers everything from from a straightforward, yet sophisticated lookup by movie or theater to a crisp, clear preview on the phone.

Movies.app interface(Credit: iTunes)

Grossman wisely included the other essential information that every moviegoer may want or need, including supporting information on IMDB, a lists of popular movies currently in theaters, and another list of shows coming to theaters soon (first up is Dark Knight). There’s also a way to buy tickets on the spot through the iPhone brand of Movietickets.com, and complete Google-powered maps and directions. The only things missing are user reviews and stars for theaters with the best popcorn.

Note: Movies.app currently provides listings for U.S. theaters only. All users may watch trailers and read up on opening flicks.
