Featured Freeware: Z-Cron

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets

You can rely on Z-Cron as a robust scheduler that can handle not only shutting down the computer, but also launching programs, leave reminder notes, and cleaning directories. Similar to the Unix Cron scheduler, and far more powerful than the native Windows task scheduler, Z-Cron is an aggressive sergeant at arms, able to tell your computer what to do and when to do it, leaving you to get on with your life when you’re away from your machine. Besides tasks, Z-Cron also has the capability to schedule tasks to run daily, weekly, monthly, once, and regularly at your system start-up.

The most useful tool that Z-Cron possesses, and what makes it such an excellent utility, is that it comes with a database of Embedded Tools. These tools are the basis for everything it can do, and they include a range of tasks such as an alarm clock, the capability to shut down a remote computer on your network, activate a USB peripheral, and connect or disconnect from the Internet.

Note that the installation is in German, although the program is in English. Still, that’s not a cause for concern: getting the program going is about as simple as can be. The value of being able to have the computer do necessary tasks while you sleep or while you’re away is a great weapon in any power users’ arsenal.

Featured Freeware: Kruptos 2

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets

This is easily one of the more useful freeware file encryption programs around. Kruptos 2’s file menu and icon interface are the picture of simplicity. Encryption is almost effortless. You can drag and drop files to the Kruptos 2 window, and the latest version adds support for dragging and dropping folders.

The encryption algorithm is Blowfish 128-bit or 256-bit, and fast. A key feature obfuscates file names but leaves folder names unaltered. The program offers a feature to see original file names with the proper password, but it is invoked one file at a time. However, Windows integration means you can perform all functions from your context menu.

Unlike many similar programs, files in nested folders are all quickly encrypted as individual files. With a single click you can decrypt a file and edit it, and the file re-encrypts on close. Self-extracting encrypted files are created with a minimum of fuss. The Shred function deletes original files to DOD standards. The program does offer a nag screen for donations, but only once. Kruptos2, with all its features, is what every user needing simple file encryption desires.

Featured Freeware: TrueCrypt

posted by ijibank in Daily Download, Trade Secrets

The ultimate open-source encryption program, TrueCrypt is loaded with powerful features that those concerned with protecting their data from thievery should want–and have.

It offers 11 algorithms for encrypting your private files in a password-protected volume. You can store your encrypted data in files (containers) or partitions (devices). TrueCrypt works hard to offer powerful data protection, recommending complex passwords, explaining the benefits of hidden volumes, and erasing telltale signs of the encryption process, including mouse movements and keystrokes. Though the interface may not be immediately intuitive, its powerful, on-the-fly encryption for no cost still earns the freeware security tool a top rating.

The latest version gives users the ability to create a hidden operating system, encrypted away from nosy busybodies, but make no mistake–TrueCrypt is not for the casual encryption explorer. Online help is plentiful and detailed, but be sure to thoroughly understand what you’re doing with the program before you do something regrettable.

Featured Freeware: RSS Bandit

posted by ijibank in Daily Download

If Really Simply Syndication is like a drug for news junkies, allowing headlines, blog posts, and podcasts to be sent automatically to a computer’s desktop every day, then RSS Bandit is the risk-free delivery system.

The basics are all present and accounted for, with subscribing, managing, and reading the flow of news all easy to perform tasks. RSS Bandit has many attractive features, too, allowing a user to merge news headlines from multiple sources onto a single page and organize articles based on keyword, read-unread status, and age. The built-in tabbed browser lets users read the full article and search for new newsfeeds without quitting the program is a must-have these days, and adding new feeds is a simple one-click action. The software lets users customize frequency and display settings for each individual feed, too. Once those settings are chosen, the program updates automatically and can display alerts whenever a new headline is available.

The native search capability is a bit lacking and could be more flexible, while the internal browser could have used an address bar to make Web navigation a bit easier. On the whole, RSS Bandit is an attractive choice for news hounds.
